“Justice Funders has been a partner and ally in building a powerful movement, from developing Bay Rising as a regional vehicle to align community and funder support for Contra Costa County to always being an advocate, cheerleader, and strategist.” - Kate O’Hara, Executive Director, East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy (EBASE).

Movement Commons

Justice Funders puts our values into practice through Movement Commons, our experimental lab for philanthropy. We partner with philanthropy and field practitioners to design, pilot, and scale both innovation and coordinated action that advance social movements.

Aligned Philanthropy: Supporting power building infrastructure

Justice Funders coordinates two Community and Funder Collaboratives to re-orient philanthropic resources to be aligned with local movement priorities and support regional power-building. Over the last 4 years, we have successfully aligned more than $1.5 million in grants to Bay Rising and Lift Up Contra Costa – two powerful civic engagement alliances comprised of frontline groups organizing for racial and economic justice.

In this new political era, it is more evident than ever that philanthropy must intentionally deploy its resources in support of social justice organizations and movements that are building power in marginalized communities to advance systemic change. However, the reality of our sector is that less than 3% of philanthropic resources support grassroots organizing. Meanwhile, grassroots groups have identified a clear need for dedicated resources to deepen and strengthen regional power building infrastructure.

Justice Funders’ work to align philanthropic resources in support of Bay Rising and Lift Up Contra Costa has provided much-needed capacity to ignite new work led by experienced base building organizations that are building power in Bay Area communities of color and low-income communities. We play a critical role in facilitating the processes that enable a variety of funders to support movement-identified priorities, coordinate their grantmaking and amplify their impact.

"If you care about building power towards greater regional equity in the Bay Area, supporting the alliances of Bay Rising and Lift Up Contra Costa are critical additions to your portfolio." -Myra Chow, Senior Director, Nurturing Equity Movements, The San Francisco Foundation

Fundraising and Power Project

In 2018, Justice Funders began a bold new project to shift how social movements engage individual supporters, pushing back against increasingly transactional methods of engagement.

Today, our Movement Commons Fundraising and Power Project includes experiments to expand and democratize support for people’s respective political journeys, transition organizations and groups to adopt the functions of political homes, and bring together development staff, who we argue are our sector’s canaries in the coal mine, for political dialogue and collective action.
